Discipline & ANARCHY: e5piral

“Life inspires me to pursue a freedom that embraces uncertainty. A universal feeling that the human experience is confusion and betrayal by life itself, a society made to create the fear of failure, recategorize experiences and divide ART All-Real-Things into separate expressions, separate people. Putting our humanity and essence into boxes, records… living through concepts. Because it’s supposed to make sense, historicity. But when you look at it long enough it’s really senseless, like trying to hold water with your hands. I guess profane realm aims to inspire you to pursue a freedom that embraces uncertainty. A universal experience called Holy shit moments. Where the pressure of society, the archive, the capture, and our own bullshit can all laugh alongside each other, not in a cynical way, but in a real way like when you're laughing with your friends and the walls between us begin to cascade away slowly like a water droplet flowing off of the edge leaf. The droplet free falls and then hits the ground, splashing Up into an energetic infinity. Remember what’s real.”

In 2022, e5piral led a Radio Bonita (NYC) satellite in Mexico City, MX in collaboration with Elrecreo.fm (CDMX) and Mitamine Lab (CDMX), transforming A gallery storefront in Roma Norte into an open space of freestyle expression through music, screen printing, writing, drawing, and face painting.

In 2023, in collaboration with Elrecreo.fm, e5piral produced Kermes Festival, a catalyst for local and cultural producers at the forefront of their community’s cultural renaissance, featuring selectors of different ages, influences, and formats. This experience led to the development of a USB with material from NYC and CDMX distributed offline at events in both countries. An unfiltered cultural exchange.

The first USB, Profane Realm 00, features lectures and poetry from Uncensored New York, discussions between artists from different scenes, DJ mixes from Elrecreo.fm (CDMX) and artists Ihopeyouh8this and Daynuuhhh. The first 20 USBs were dropped at LUSTHILL, during a midtown Manhattan tunnel rave. Other drop locations include the John Giorno Foundation (NYC), Printed Matter (NYC), and Lagunilla Market (Tepito, CDMX). USB 00 contents and more info can be found on the Profane Realm Website. Subscribe to the Profane ReAlm newsletter to learn about upcoming Usb drop locations.

WHY DO YOU DO IT? WHAT DRIVES YOU?

Holy shit moments. Whatever that raw energy is, before words, that connects people and can suspend time and place. A feeling like bass that hits an unknown place in your body, reminding you — I’m fucking alive! I’ve connected with others through this feeling, music, dance, and universal expressions of being here with you, not thinking about tomorrow.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU DO FOR SANITY MAINTENANCE?

Perspective.

WHAT IS THE SCRAPPIEST THING YOU’VE DONE TO MAKE OR SAVE $$?

Bike messenger delivery through a NYC winter.

YOUR TASK IS TO PRESCRIBE ONE BOOK OR FILM TO THE COLLECTIVE FOR MANDATORY CONSUMPTION. WHAT IS IT?

“Why should I seek more?
I am the same as he.
His essence speaks through me.
I have been looking for myself.”

― Rumi, THE BOOK OF LOVE: POEMS OF ECSTASY AND LONGING

current obsession?

Making money and my husband.

MOST USEFUL FAILURE?

Forgetting to laugh.

SELECTED Q FROM THE PROUST QUESTIONNAIRE: WHat do you most value in your friends?

Curiosity and sincerity.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

Public-interest tech.
Profane Realm USB 01s are in production. A lot of different artists and different materials are involved so we're working together. There will be distribution events in NYC and CDMX. The USB will also include a mixtape and stems for remixing.
I'm working on a music video that will come out soon. It's my first time directing, and it's for one of my favorite artists. I'm also editing a Sony Vx video archive of music shows going back to 2020. You can see what's already up on Profane Realm YT channel. There’s also footage of Nicaragua that my dad took with the Vx going back to 1999.
