Discipline & ANARCHY: iD-SUS

Habib Fall (1997, Senegal) AKA ID-sus is a Senegalese-American artist based in NewYork. iD merges experimental hip hop, electronica noise, and industrial with an unconventional West African backbone. A curated sonic elixir laced with biosynthetic themes slowly injecting into the soft underbelly of the underground scene. iD-sus sees himself creating elevated experiences that positively assists him as tools needed to battle his own alienation.

iD’s work explores the illusion of the body’s exterior by selecting out and re-framing physiological elements. This work is a response to what he experiences from the American Opticon gaze to transgressive bodies. This creates feelings of being under suspicion and alienation for himself and others. These conditions sometimes lead to an entirely new level of external demonization taken so literally that the subject’s experience borderlines on body horror. The surveillance he senses presents an eerie contrast to his experience in Senegal. Latching on to the domesticated everyday stimuli of life, he seeks to reshape his experience through world building to create a different ethos. He does this through sculpture as a functional apparatus that he uses in tandem with his live music, as well as creating an elevated shared experience through audio-visual productions.

WHY DO YOU DO IT? WHAT DRIVES YOU?

Why do I do it? It's something to do, man. Fuck. If I wasn't doing it, I don't know. Maybe I'd be a scientist or something. There's no stopping now.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU DO FOR SANITY MAINTENANCE?

Working on stuff. Having a drive. I can't just fucking sit around. I'm so bad at it. I can't fucking sit still. There's too much shit. So trying to stay active when I can and knowing when I need to not be active. Vices, too. Cigarettes and old blues shit. I love Robert Johnson. I'm like a reincarnated Robert Johnson.

WHAT IS THE SCRAPPIEST THING YOU’VE DONE TO MAKE OR SAVE $$?

Sell my ass. No, no, I'll just tell you. I worked in a gallery for fucking three months. Three fucking months. Yeah. And they paid me $200. They were saying it was like an internship to see if they could bring me on, and they led me on for the longest time. I was working at this gallery in Manhattan and they fucking screwed me over so bad.

YOUR TASK IS TO PRESCRIBE ONE BOOK OR FILM TO THE COLLECTIVE FOR MANDATORY CONSUMPTION. WHAT IS IT?

Joseph Conrad's HEART OF DARKNESS

current obsession?

Am I obsessed with myself? We all have our obsessive thoughts.
What am I obsessed with right now? What's my current fixation? SFX. Yeah. I've been eating and shitting that shit out. Like Studio ADI made the alien (in the ALIEN francise) and THE THING. It's a really cool studio in LA. So I look at how they make the animatronics, trying to think about how I'm gonna do my next animatronic work because I don't have any real animatronic stuff. It's more just like a visual thing. It's not moving. So I would say practical effects right now is my current favorite.

MOST USEFUL FAILURE?

SELECTED Q FROM THE PROUST QUESTIONNAIRE: How would you like to die?

Death by trepanation.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

Finishing the iD-SuS EP and getting more into that crazy hyperrealism. Create an experience where you don't know what's real. Live animatronics onstage with actors. Creating parts of the set where it's just acting, you know? Like two characters having a dialogue, working with the organ, maybe even talking about it, and then breaking into a set. Puppeteers being born on stage, dying on stage, coming out of a wet sack or something. Crazy shit. Because even with the songs, I always feel like I'm going through a mandala sequence and being reborn every time I do a different song.
