Discipline & ANARCHY: RACHEL HAYWIRE

Rachel Haywire is a Multimedia Producer, Salonnière, and Consultant who runs The Cultural Futurist Substack. She advises creative professionals across the fields of live performance, visual art, cultural startups, political strategy, AI, and luxury fashion. She is also the author of The New Art Right.

Haywire is the founder of the transgressive luxury art gallery Fiume. Fiume is a sacred art gallery in NYC’s chelsea district with a focus on the avant-garde and the forbidden. It is a Futurist space heralding in a new rising class of artists for the regime ahead, reanimating culture through salons, multimedia exhibits, vitalist paintings, eclectic performance art, poetry, live music, underground film, luxury fashion shows, metapolitical discussions, and more. It will open to the public on march 22, 2025.

WHY DO YOU DO IT? WHAT DRIVES YOU?

I curate the art I love that doesn't get mainstream attention because talent shouldn't depend on what college you went to or how well you play the prestige game.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU DO FOR SANITY MAINTENANCE?

Dancing to industrial music at goth clubs. It gets my aggressive energy out. It's the ultimate release. I express the dark feminine energy that is taboo in our trad-obsessed culture.

WHAT IS THE SCRAPPIEST THING YOU’VE DONE TO MAKE OR SAVE $$?

I used to make cyberpunk necklaces out of circruit boards that I sold at music festivals. I got the circuit boards from my nerd friends and attached them to lanyard.

YOUR TASK IS TO PRESCRIBE ONE BOOK OR FILM TO THE COLLECTIVE FOR MANDATORY CONSUMPTION. WHAT IS IT?

UPSTREAM COLOR. Just watch it and you'll see what I mean.

Current obsession?

Wyndham Lewis and the Vorticism movement.

MOST USEFUL FAILURE?

Wanting to be some underground cult icon. I wasn't meant to be in front of the camera or onstage. I was meant to direct and choreograph my talented friends as a media producer.

SELECTED Q FROM THE PROUST QUESTIONNAIRE: WhAt is the trait you most deplore in others?

The trait I most deplore in others is cowardice. There is nothing worse than being a coward.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

A casting call for my new transgressive art gallery. I'm getting women in the avant-garde art and music scenes together to put on a dark surrealist runway show for our opening.

DISCIPLINE OR ANARCHY?

The anarchy of discipline.
